The Importance of Clean Water

At DO IT Organic, based in The Netherlands, we’re fortunate to turn on the tap and trust that clean drinking water flows freely—ready to quench our thirst, fill our pots, or wash our groceries. This sense of ‘security’ might also be part of the reason we don’t often think twice about the actual quality of our water. But there’s more to that than some would suspect.
The reality behind our water
The importance of clean drinking water is clear. And in a country so deeply tied to water—whether through canals, rivers, or dikes—you’d think we’d be ahead of the curve. However, the actual quality of that famous Dutch water is and has been seriously deteriorating, and reports have shown that only one percent of all the waters in The Netherlands can be rated as being of good quality. In a study from 2022 this small ‘wet’ country ranked at the very bottom of all EU-member states quality-wise. Quite the cold shower…
The role of agriculture
One of the contributors to this pollution of groundwater and surface water is the use of manure chemicals and synthetic pesticides in conventional and intensive agriculture. These substances leach into the soil and eventually make their way into our water sources—including the resources used for drinking water. Their residues may pose risks to humans, animals, and entire ecosystems alike.
At DO IT Organic, we believe water well-being starts with responsible farming. That’s why organic agriculture—free from synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilisers—plays such a key role.
Water well-being
By working in harmony with nature, we reduce the burden on water systems, safeguard ecosystems, and contribute to clean water for current and future generations.
Our commitment is rooted in the organic Principle of Care. We stand for a world where food production nurtures both people and planet—and that includes protecting every precious drop of water. Together for our planet!
